Dirty Wall
Description: Im still trying to find out what exactly these metal plates are on old buildings. Ive seen many different styles but this ones unique. Very eloborate and detailed. The building can be found behind the old Gasworks Industrial buildings, now known as the Imperior Opera Thearter at Berkley and Front. Anyone know what these metal plates/markers were used for or what their called?

Building ties

These look like building ties. What they used to do is run a steel or iron rod through the length of a building and put these stoppers at the ends. This would help keep the building from expanding in the middle and falling down. Might not be the case here, but I have seen this used quite often in old buildings.

Building Ties

We have older buildings in Evansville with large iron stars. Some of the buildings are old stables, brick, and the houses on the same property will sometimes have the stars too, if they are brick. I was told that the iron rods were to help stabilize the brick work or walls themselves. I am wondering if different locations/cities had different stoppers on the ouside, and if they were made locally.
